Jason Blume Seminar: Taking Your Songs to the Next Level

...a hands-on workshop with Hit Songwriter/Publisher/Author Jason Blume
During the 2-day event Jason will examine and analyze the lyric and melodic tools and techniques used in successful songs in a variety of popular styles including current pop, country, singer/songwriter, adult contemporary, R&B, and contemporary folk.

You will have an opportunity to "try on" some of these tools during guided creative writing exercises. Those who wish may share their writing and receive constructive feedback in an encouraging, supportive environment --but sharing your melodies and lyrics is not required. The first (15) who register in each city are guaranteed a song critique. Additional critiques will be selected at random, as time permits.

The workshop will provide multiple opportunities to practice crafting melodies and lyrics that incorporate specific, easy-to-learn techniques that are found in some of today's most successful songs. (No musical training--or ability to play an instrument--is required for these exercises--or to write successful songs!)

You will leave with several new songs started--and the tools to finish them.

Come prepared to be inspired and to leave with the knowledge and skills needed to take your songs to the next level.

In this seminar, you’ll learn how to make your songs work as little movies and how to allow a lyric to groove and breathe. We’ll be discussing inflection, the melody of the spoken word, rhythm, rhyme, and repetition.

During the weekend, you’ll tune into the writing process, evoking all of the senses in order to communicate your emotions, your ideas, your stories in ways that are almost unavoidably heard, felt and understood by your listeners.

The seminar will give you tools you need to pursue these ideas on your own, to dig deeper, to write bigger, to connect with other human beings in the old and beautiful ways that songs can do.

Masterclass
In this 3 hour session, artist and songwriter Kevin Welch will listen to songs from participants in order of registration and offer feedback on a range of topics, from lyrics to melody, focussing on tools that all writers can use in the development and delivery of their ideas. Due to time constraints, it is not possible to guarantee that every song will be presented in the class. There will be a keyboard available, as well as a guitar amp and vocal mic. Please bring a lyric sheet for Kevin that he can write on.
